Edinburgh, the capital city of Scotland, gives you plenty of opportunities to indulge in some exciting adventures outdoors. Moving away from the hustle-bustle of the city, you’ll be astonished to discover some wonderful open spaces. These are places where a wide range of outdoor activities await the adventure lovers.

You can book with any of the local tour operators who specialize in arranging such activities for tourists. If you’re concerned about your fitness levels, ask your tour operator before going ahead with the booking. You don’t need high levels of fitness to enjoy most of the outdoor activities. Here are some of the adventurous pursuits you can enjoy while touring Edinburgh:

1. Canyoning

This would be one of your best outdoor experiences in this part of the world. You’ll be placed in one of the groups that travel down a steep river gorge. Individuals in the group who are interested in cliff-jumping can enjoy plunging into the freshwater pools from the cliffs.

This activity is usually offered by the local tour operators as a part of the day trip from Edinburgh. You’ll be taken to parts of Scotland that many only get to admire from distant places. The group would be accompanied by qualified instructors and provided all the technical equipment needed for the activity.

2. Hiking

You’ll find the world’s most beautiful landscapes in Scotland and Edinburgh certainly has some of them. There are mountainous terrains and coastal trails worth exploring near the city. The best way to enjoy them is to go on guided hiking tours from Edinburgh. Upon booking your tour with one of the local operators, you’ll be accompanied by a qualified mountain leader.

You’ll be placed in a group of hikers before embarking on the exciting journey through the Scottish uplands. No vehicle would be taken along while hiking to get everyone to focus on the overall experience. You can, of course, take some amazing pictures to capture the memorable moments.

3. Mountain Biking

There are several trails for mountain biking that are easily accessible from Edinburgh. You can choose your trail according to the desired level of difficulty. These trails can be natural or man-made or a combination of both. On the day of this activity, you’ll be picked up from your place of accommodation.

Mountain biking for adventurous people

Then, you’ll be driven to the trail center. A mountain bike and helmet would be provided along with a detailed brief about the entire day. You can then go mountain biking on some of the best trails near Edinburgh. Don’t forget to take some wonderful snaps on the way with your camera or smartphone!

4. Canoeing

Scotland has captivating remote landscapes, lochs, and rivers that can be explored with a canoe. This light, narrow boat would be ideal for an exciting journey through the Scottish wilderness. Canoeing gives you the opportunity to experience nature at its best. You can book a full-day canoeing trip with any of the local service providers.

Their representative will pick you up from your place of stay and drive you to the canoeing venue. You’ll be provided with a canoe, paddles, and buoyancy aids for the activity. The skills and techniques needed for the day would also be taught by the instructor. You can then embark on your canoeing adventure through one of the country’s best rivers or lochs.

Holyrood House, the Queen’s Scottish residence in Edinburgh

During your stay in Morningside you’d certainly want to visit the most popular places nearby. You can take one of the Lothian buses to get to Edinburgh. Once you’re in the Scottish capital, you’ll have many tourist attractions worth exploring. While getting around in Edinburgh, you’ll get a glimpse of the city’s past.

In the 18th-century New Town, you’ll get to witness the elegant Georgian neighborhoods. When you get to the Old Town, you’ll see hidden passageways, narrow winding lanes, and steep staircases. Besides these two historical places, you’ll get to witness many other attractions in Edinburgh.

1. National Monument of Scotland

The National Monument of Scotland is dedicated to the country’s soldiers and sailors who died in the Napoleonic Wars. It is located on Calton Hill, which offers a panoramic view of the entire Edinburgh city. This monument modeled on the Parthenon of Athens dominates the summit of Calton Hill.

It was designed by the architects William Henry Playfair and Charles Robert Cockerell. Construction of the monument began in 1826, but was left unfinished in 1829 due to lack of funds. This led to several nicknames being given to it, such as ‘Edinburgh’s Disgrace’ and ‘Scotland’s Folly’.

Several attempts were made in the following years to complete it, but were unsuccessful. The monument was classified as Category A building in 1966 and underwent repairs in 2008.

2. Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh

Home to over 13,000 different plant species, this is the second oldest garden of its kind in the UK. The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh (RBGE) was founded in 1670 and is spread over 70 acres. While exploring this garden you’ll come across some rare giant trees. They were brought from China, the Himalayas, and North America.

A herbarium in this botanic garden has a collection of more than three million specimens. Other highlights of this garden include the woodland garden. It has colorful azaleas, camellias, and tropical water plants among the other offerings. If you visit this botanic garden during Christmas, you’ll get to witness some spectacular displays of lights.

3. National Museum of Scotland

One of the most popular attractions of the country, the National Museum of Scotland was opened in 2011. Visiting this museum is one of the best things you can do for free in the Scottish capital. It is visited by more than two million individuals annually. The collections of this museum includes the ones from many of Edinburgh’s older museums.

Among the highlights are the medieval artifacts, archaeological collections and a variety of displays. Over 8,000 artifacts are displayed in the museum’s 16 galleries. Upon browsing these galleries, you’ll come across the world’s first cloned mammal known as Dolly the sheep. There are two restaurants in this museum and you can also benefit from its guided tours.

4. Holyrood Palace

Also known as ‘Palace of Holyroodhouse’ or simply ‘Holyroodhouse’, this palace is the British monarch’s official residence in Scotland. It is located at the bottom of the Royal Mile. It was constructed in 1678 and has been the center of Scottish history ever since. The Queen spends a week at this palace every summer.

Portraits of Scottish kings have been displayed in The Great Gallery. As a part of the Golden Jubilee celebrations, The Queen’s Gallery was opened in 2002. If you’re travelling with your family, allow your kids to put on the costumes in the Family Room.

Morningside was once a small village in the south of the Scottish capital, Edinburgh. At the time, all it had was a few cottages and farms. It was a part of a woodland and an open space, which was mostly used for hunting. This land stretched from the hills of Pentland to Burgh Loch.

After the opening of the railway station in the late 19th century, Morningside increased in size. Today, it is a suburb of Edinburgh. There are several historic buildings and other attractions in the district. However, you can also explore its interesting neighborhoods for some more options.

Newington

Located in the south of Edinburgh, Newington is colloquially known as ‘The Southside’. It can be reached by walking for about 10 to 15 minutes from Edinburgh’s city center. Newington was a rural area before the South Bridge was constructed in the late 18th century. It has a large student population. This is why many of the local businesses cater mostly to the students.

While exploring this neighborhood, you can visit The Queen’s Hall. It is a popular venue for musical shows, concerts, and other events. Besides this hall, you’ll also get the opportunity to visit historical sites, cafes, bars, and museums.

West End

The West End area is one of the hidden gems of Edinburgh. You’ll get a bohemian feel while exploring this part of the Scottish capital. Located just behind Shandwick Place, it is a delightful place to visit for locals as well as tourists.

You’ll find many stylish and colorful boutiques on William Street and Stafford Street. The pubs and bars would offer you the right atmosphere to unwind and savor a few drinks. You can reach this neighborhood by taking one of the Lothian Buses. Don’t forget to explore Edinburgh Gin Distillery when you’re in West End.

Old Town

Edinburgh’s historic center is another excellent place worth exploring as it takes you back in time. It has been named Old Town to differentiate it from the New Town located to the north. This historic quarter was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1995.

You’ll obviously have some wonderful old structures to explore while touring this part of the Scottish capital. One of them is the Edinburgh Castle, a magnificent fortress that dominates the city’s skyline. Another must-visit attraction is Grassmarket, which is an old market and event space.

Leith

A port area in the north of Edinburgh, Leith gives you some wonderful dining options and enchanting seaside views. Upon moving away from the shore, you’ll come across shops selling old books, antiques, and other rare items. Coburg House would be an excellent place to visit for local artistry and exhibitions.

Your visit to Leith won’t be complete without exploring The Royal Yacht Britannia. This renowned ship was home to the Royal Family for more than 40 years. Today, it is a five-star attraction and is just two miles away from the city center.

Portobello

This coastal suburb of Edinburgh was historically a seaside town. It is located in eastern central Scotland, about 5 kilometers to the east of the city center. The major attraction of Portobello is its sandy beach and the promenade. You’ll get to witness a lot of activity on the Portobello Beach.

A few annual events are also held on this beach, such as the Big Busk. You can also indulge in some great shopping experiences while exploring Portobello High Street.

When you’re in Edinburgh, it won’t take much time for you to realize that it’s quite a walkable city. However, the Scottish capital also has a highly efficient public transportation system. The main bus company called ‘Lothian Buses’ covers over 50 routes. It connects locals and tourists to the city center, Edinburgh Airport, and the neighboring suburbs.

For most of the tourists, the city center and the Royal Mile would be of prime importance. The airport is easily accessible by trams or buses. Extended hours are also available for late travelers. Now, let’s take a look at the public transportation options you can consider for getting around in Edinburgh:

1. Lothian Buses

Although there are several bus companies operating in Edinburgh, Lothian Buses are extremely popular. They are the primary mode of public transportation in the city. Besides covering more than 50 different routes throughout the Scottish capital, it also has ‘NightBus’ and ‘Airport Bus’ services.

Upon purchasing ‘DAYtickets’, you can enjoy unlimited rides on Lothian Buses as well as Edinburgh Trams. Families can purchase group DAYtickets that cover two adults and three children. Tickets for Airport Bus and NightBus must be purchased individually. Lothian Buses also have a dedicated wheelchair space in them.

2. Edinburgh Trams

They connect Edinburgh Airport with York Place and are also accessible for wheelchair users. The route covered by these trams have 15 stops. For those wanting good connectivity with the airport, they are a good option. You can reach the airport within 35 minutes from Princes Street, the stop nearest to the city center.

Trams may not be that useful for getting around in the city if you’re staying in the Royal Mile. At each of the tram stops, you can get a ticket for your journey. The trams run from early morning until 11:00 pm. It is important to note that the first and last tram timings vary depending on the direction of travel.

3. Edinburgh Cycle Hire

You can use the ‘Edinburgh Cycle Hire’ service to rent bicycles temporarily for getting around in the city. There are 99 different stations available throughout Edinburgh for parking these bicycles. They are rented using a mobile app, which is available for iPhone and Android users.

It would allow you to unlock a bicycle and enjoy a ride for up to an hour. You also have the option to choose an electric or a pedal bike. Multi-trip access must be selected if you plan to halt at various places. Helmets are not required in Edinburgh for cyclists, but using one is highly recommended for your safety.

4. Taxis

As there are several taxi companies that operate in the Scottish capital, you can hire one without any hassles. Taxis can be hired from the airport or booked online using your phone. The most popular cab company in Edinburgh is Central Taxis.

It also offers guided driving tours of the city if you wish to benefit from the driver’s knowledge. You must be prepared to pay extra fares during unexpected circumstances, such as heavy traffic. If you wish to make your travel in a taxi cheaper, use Uber and its ridesharing app.

You’ll get to discover some interesting things in Morningside when you begin exploring the fascinating Scottish district. It is located in the south-western part of Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland. Since quite a long time, it has been attracting many individuals who like to unwind amid serene environs.

Many of them never knew certain facts about this part of Scotland. Well, it’s not their fault at all. You’ll need to spend some more time in this Scottish district to know such things. So, here we present some intriguing facts about Morningside:

1. The roller coaster life of Morningside Public Library

The public library of this district has seen many ups and downs. It underwent many repairs and renovation works in its lifetime. The makeover of 2011 was a major one, which cost a million pounds. It made the magnificent Edwardian building look more beautiful. Misfortune struck once again as it was forced to close again after the discovery of dry rot. It was only declared safe for re-opening towards the end of 2013.

2. Morningside can be a paradise for pizza lovers

If you’re a pizza lover, you’ll be grateful for having visited this amazing Scottish district. There are four pizzerias at less than half a mile of distance from each other on Morningside Road. All of them have been opened quite recently. They include famous chains like Pizza Express, Dominos, and La Favorita.

If you want more options, you can get in touch with any of the local Italian restaurants. You’ll never be short of pizza in Morningside.

3. You can go to the police box for a coffee

You’ll be astonished to know that the best cup of coffee in Morningside comes from a little police box. It sits right outside Marks and Spencer and is a big hit with locals as well as tourists. The couple behind this coffee shop had started it in a former police box in 2014. If you visit this box between 7:30 am and 3:00 pm, you can enjoy a refreshing cup of coffee.

4. The bank that was once a train station

If you visit the Morningside branch of the Bank of Scotland, try to get some information about its past. Well, now you don’t have to, because we’re letting you know about it. You probably know about the freight line running underneath Morningside Road. This was open from 1884 to 1962.

The line was used for passenger trains and the Bank of Scotland branch of Morningside was a train station. In the early 1960s, the Edinburgh Suburban Line was discontinued. What remains today is only the Morningside Station entrance.

5. Morningside once had trams running through it

From 1872 to 1956, Morningside was a part of the original tram system of Edinburgh. You can find the remnants of it throughout the suburb even today. In the 1950s, the final tram journey from Morningside Station to Shrubhill depot was witnessed by thousands of locals. This event was also broadcast live on the BBC.

6. The Bore Stane

If you’re a non-Scot, you might’ve never heard about Bore Stane (or Bore Stone). It doesn’t matter how you pronounce it, but what really matters is its importance in Scotland’s history. This enormous ancient rock marked the spot from where King James IV set off for the Battle of Flodden. Later, the stone was built into a wall and a plaque was added above it.

7. The raucous past of The Canny Man

One of the best-known landmarks of the district is The Canny Man’s pub. It is well-known for its Bloody Marys and quirky atmosphere. Opened in 1871 as The Volunteer’s Arms, this pub is an excellent spot to relax and enjoy a few drinks. You’ll be surprised to know that this place was not always this quiet. It was home to some risque entertainment in the 1970s with the presence of go-go dancers throughout the day.

You can also have a relaxing stay in this suburb and explore some of its wonderful offerings. You’ll certainly find some interesting historical buildings while getting around in this part of Scotland. Let’s have a look at some of them:

1. Morningside Public Library

This public library is located on 184 Morningside Road. It was one of Scotland’s busiest libraries in the 1970s. Morningside Public Library was opened in the year 1904 and got extended in 1929.

2. Dominion Cinema

It is an independent cinema, which has been constructed in the Streamline Moderne style of Art Deco architecture. It is also one of Scotland’s only two family-run cinemas. The company to which it belongs was incorporated on the 13th of May 1937 by William Cameron.

When it was opened on the 31st of January 1938, it had a seating capacity of 1,300. There were two occasions when it was forced to close. The first was in 1939 at the start of the Second World War. At the time, there were widespread fears over air raids. However, it reopened a week later owing to public demand.

The second time it was forced to close was during the COVID-19 pandemic. In order to add more screens, it had planned closures in 1972, 1980, and 1998. In 1993, it received protection after getting listed as a Category B building. Today, the cinema is still run by the Cameron family as a four-screen venue.

3. Church Hill Theatre

Yet another Category B listed building, Church Hill Theatre was a former church called ‘Morningside Free Church’. It was originally built in 1892 using pink sandstone and was designed by Hippolyte Blanc. It was purchased by the town council of Edinburgh in 1960.

After some extensive refurbishment works, it was re-opened in 2006. The auditorium of this theater has a seating capacity of 353. After the renovation was done, lift access was provided to a privately-run cafe and the auditorium.

The building also has space for smaller functions. It has become a popular venue for amateur drama productions over the years. It also hosts the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and Edinburgh International Festival. Additionally, the theater also hosts many dance companies and non-professional theater groups.

4. St Peter’s Church

A parish of the Roman Catholic Church, St Peter’s church falls within the Archdiocese of St Andrews and Edinburgh. It is located on the corner of Falcon Gardens and Falcon Avenue. The church was built during the period between 1906 and 1907. The nave of the church was extended between 1928 and 1929.

The building of this parish church was designed by Sir Robert Lorimer. He was a renowned Scottish architect and furniture designer. The church has been listed as a Category A building. St Peter’s Church was founded by Marc-Andre Raffalovitch and Canon John Gray. The latter had to resign from his post of a curate at St Patrick’s Church in Edinburgh.

This was done so that he could take charge of the new parish. The Second Vatican Council’s liturgical reforms led to certain changes in the church. Much of its furniture designed by Sir Robert Lorimer was removed. The marble altar and cast-iron altar rails were also lost in this process.

Located in the southwestern part of Edinburgh, Morningside is among the most prestigious places in the Scottish capital. It was formerly a village and a part of an ancient route extending from Edinburgh to Scotland’s southwestern region.

Today, it is a bustling suburb with independent coffee houses, fine dining restaurants, local shops, and other offerings. Morningside has an excellent mix of the old and new. Many of the more recent structures co-exist with several Victorian-style villas.

Growth as an agricultural village

The Morningside village came upon an extensive area of land gifted by David I, the king of Scotland. He had given this land to Edinburgh as a gift in the 12th century. The town council sold the western part of this land in the late 16th century. This was done to pay for the enormous cost of dealing with the plague of 1585. The village of Morningside gradually developed on this land.

Morningside was first mentioned in one of the works of Richard Cooper, an 18th-century English engraver. The Scottish novelist James Grant had also described the village in one of his writings in 1882. It grew as an agricultural village quite rapidly and served the farms and estates nearby. Soon, it became an important stopping point on the road to Edinburgh.

Development as a residential suburb

In the early 19th century, Morningside attracted many of the wealthier residents of Edinburgh. They obtained large plots from the nearby estates and constructed villas and mansions on them. By the mid-19th century, much of today’s street pattern had been established.

Development in transportation further accelerated the growth of this suburb in the late 19th century. Tram service was started in the 1870s, which was the first of its kind in Edinburgh. It directly linked with Princes Street’s east end in the city centre. These trams were driven by horses before they were replaced by cable cars. Later, electric trams were started in this region.

Another big boost came when Edinburgh Suburban and South Side Junction Railway was opened in 1885. The trains carried passengers between Waverley Station and Morningside Road Station. Morningside was well established by the first half of the 20th century. It had schools, a public library, churches, a ballroom, and a cinema.

Morningside in recent times

Morningside is a thriving residential district today with a population of over 32,000 residents. The main shopping street of the suburb is Morningside Road, which has many shops and cafes. Most of these cafes and shops are independent businesses.

There are two primary schools in the district besides a public library, a cinema, a theater, and several churches. Many of the Victorian and Edwardian villas that were built in the 19th century have survived to this day. However, the Victorian tenements are the predominant form of housing, particularly in Morningside’s northern areas.

The places to the south of the railway line that has a lesser population mostly have bungalows. They also have semi-detached and detached homes to some extent. The services of passenger trains were withdrawn in 1962, but Morningside has excellent transport links with the city centre. The suburb is served by Lothian Buses, UK’s largest municipal bus company.

It’s quite obvious that you need a comfortable place to stay for exploring any of the world’s best destinations. When it comes to accommodation in the Scottish capital, there are several options you can choose from. All of these options cater to travelers with varying budgets.

One of the greatest benefits of staying in or near Edinburgh is excellent connectivity. Edinburgh’s efficient public transport makes it easier for you to reach your desired places in and around the city. So, here we present some of the best options in accommodation that Edinburgh has to offer for its visitors:

1. Hotels

You can select a hotel based on the size of your budget and the facilities offered. After a long day of exploration, it would be great to have a comfortable place to relax. If you’re someone who is not concerned about budgets, the best place to stay would be the city center. This would give you the required convenience to explore the city’s top attractions.

If you like being transported to the good old days, choose the Old Town for accommodation. New Town is also a good place to stay for history buffs. If you wish to enjoy awe-inspiring views of the sea, stay near the waterfront in Leith.

2. Self-catering accommodations

In recent times, many options in self-catering accommodations have come up in the Scottish capital. There are modern serviced apartments to choose from, if you wish to stay in the heart of the city. The historic Old Town or New Town has some excellent Georgian apartments with high ceilings. If you’re thinking of staying a bit far from the city’s hustle-bustle, the Lothians would be the best.

The beautiful countryside of the Lothians has farmhouses, self-catering cottages, and lodges that offer you memorable stays. An important thing to note is that most of the countryside accommodations are offered on a weekly basis.

3. B&Bs and guest houses

Edinburgh also offers a range of comfortable Bed and Breakfasts and some pleasant, welcoming guest houses. They are great options for staying in the capital city for those traveling on a budget. You’ll surely enjoy a cosy night’s sleep and a hearty breakfast while staying in them. Most of the guest houses and B&Bs are located outside the city in pleasant neighborhoods.

These neighborhoods enjoy easy connectivity with Edinburgh’s city center. Some of them also give you the convenience of reaching the city center by walking. These B&Bs and guesthouses can also be chosen according to your budget. They mostly range from the basic to the boutique and the luxurious.

4. Hostels

Hostels are low-cost, friendly places to rest and recharge after a busy day of travel. One of the biggest reasons why many travelers choose hostels is that they are fairly-priced accommodations. Most of the hostels in Edinburgh are located near the city center and don’t compromise on comforts.

Booking your stay in a hostel would save you a considerable sum for more explorations and adventures. Besides, you can make a lot of new friends while staying at a hostel. If those travellers are experienced enough, they’ll be able to give you some recommendations and tips.
